Meet Huub Lazarom, General Manager of CORPUS
Dear friends, First of all, we would like to wish you a healthy and happy 2009. After the hustle and bustle of the Christmas holidays, we too are starting the New Year full of enthusiasm. At the end of 2008, Huub Lazarom joined CORPUS in the position of General Manager, and you can meet him in this edition of the newsletter. We will also bring you up to date with a number of very exciting developments within CORPUS, including CORPUS abroad!
Meet Huub Lazarom, General Manager
Since 1 October 2008, Huub Lazarom has been the General Manager of CORPUS. Huub was born in 1963. He is married and has 2 teenage sons. He has a background in economics and in his last job he was a member of the management team of Hommerson Arcades BV, a company which operates large gaming arcades. Huub: ‘When I left university, I started working in the banking sector, after which I changed to the gambling industry. I first spent a number of years working at Holland Casino, and from 2002 I worked at Hommerson. A number of things led me to seek a new challenge. The most important was that I felt ready to devote my time and efforts to a socially responsible product. My children are growing up and are being confronted more and more frequently with the temptations of life. As a father, I want to do my best to help them make the right choices, and here I think it is essential for me to set a good example as much as I can. And from society's point of view, the gambling world is a tricky subject. CORPUS, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. With its philosophy of ‘healthy living, healthy eating and plenty of exercise' it encourages its visitors to choose a healthy lifestyle. That really appeals to me, so when Henri asked me to take on the position of General Manager at CORPUS, I said ‘yes' without a moment's hesitation. I think it is wonderful to be able to devote myself to an organisation which is socially responsible in this way.' Read more >>
Kika is one of the Founding Fathers of CORPUS.
Kika (Kinderen Kankervrij = Free Children Of Cancer) raises funds for research so that the seven children's cancer centres in the Netherlands can make therapies available more quickly for the improved treatment and healing of childhood cancers. The aim is ‘less pain and struggle' and more healing and quality. Thanks to a donation from Mr and Mrs E.R. Zeilstra-ten Oever, Kika is one of the Founding Fathers of CORPUS. A talk with Frits Hirschstein, founder and ambassador of Kika: ‘The unusual thing about Kika is that we look like a large organisation, but actually we're not. Our strength lies in the fact that we manage to achieve a great deal with few resources. Just take a look at our office, for example. We only have 5 part-time staff. Nonetheless, we are in the top 15 good causes, large numbers of people are actively involved with our organisation and every year we raise large sums of money to combat childhood cancers. In 2007, this was nearly 7.5 million euros, of which we spent more than 6.7 million euros on research. This is totally unique for a foundation which has only been in existence for 6 years.' CORPUS abroad
The success of CORPUS has not gone unnoticed abroad. International parties regularly approach CORPUS to ask whether they can develop the same concept in their own country. In principle, the developer and originator of CORPUS, Reco Productions International, always receives such requests in a positive light. However, the management still needs to carefully consider the pros and cons of each application. Pim de Nerée from Reco Productions International, who is responsible for international contacts and the expansion of the CORPUS concept abroad, says: Read more>>
Burning calories in CORPUS?
When you have taken the CORPUS ‘journey through the human body', you can then visit the Medical Infotheque. If you walk down from the 7th floor, you will find information about the human body, games and exhibits by our Founding Fathers on each floor. You could take the lift, but of course there are always the stairs... Did you know that if you use the stairs for 15 minutes, you will burn an average of 152 calories? Good to know if you fancy a cup of coffee and something sweet in the restaurant when you've finished!
CORPUS special offers
CORPUS has attractive special offers on a regular basis. These are mainly organised in conjunction with the Founding Fathers or with nearby attractions. For example, CORPUS issues combined tickets with Madurodam, Sealife and Omniversum. Visitors receive a discount if they visit CORPUS and Madurodam, Sealife or Omniversum on the same day. Madurodam, the whole of Holland in one city! Corpus and Madurodam offer groups the opportunity of saving money by combining both attractions on the same day. Both attractions combine entertainment and education in a unique way. The miniature city of Madurodam shows all the surprising aspects of the Netherlands, such as Amsterdam canalside houses, the Utrecht Cathedral Tower, the Binnenhof inner court in The Hague where it is the Day of the Queen's speech every day, and part of the Delta Works.
Combine your visit to Corpus with SEA LIFE Scheveningen Discover the amazing, beautiful underwater world and come face to face with marine animals from all over the globe: piranhas, sharks, turtles and many more. There is also a seahorse breeding centre and an underwater tunnel filled with 180,000 litres of water. We give special presentations for groups and in the holidays there are extra children's activities.
Omniversum in The Hague proves once and for all that school trips can be both fun and educational. It is the only large-format film theatre in the Netherlands, with a dome-shaped screen measuring 840 square metres. You sit right in the middle of the film! And for the 10 am screening, you may choose from any of the available Omniversum films. For example, you could choose our archive film The Human Body in combination with the Corpus ‘journey through the human body'. For more information about our films, visit www.omniversum.nl

Cooperation between Keukenhof and CORPUS 'journey through the human body'
Over the past few months, Keukenhof, the world's most beautiful flower garden, and CORPUS ‘journey through the human body' have exhibited together at a number of shows. Both organisations consider regional cooperation to be extremely important. As well as a presentation at the public fairs 50 plus and Margriet Winterfair, we will also be taking part together in a number of consumer shows in neighbouring countries. Both organisations are extremely enthusiastic about this initiative. Keukenhof will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2009. The special exhibition at the park (19 March - 21 May) will look back at the most beautiful Keukenhof moments. For more information about Keukenhof, please visit their website www.Keukenhof.nl
Society of Dutch Rheumatic Patients puts a scarf on CORPUS
Because of World Arthritis Day, the Society of Dutch Rheumatic Patients offered CORPUS a warm scarf on 10 October 2008 in a rather spectacular way, to mark the start of the Rheuma Monitor (Reumamonitor) campaign for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), or chronic inflammation of the joints. At 10.10 am, two professional climbers wrapped a light-blue scarf bearing the logo REUMAMONITOR.NL around the 'neck' of the CORPUS building. The scarf (called a 'das' in Dutch) symbolises the DAS28, the score list of the Rheuma Monitor. This allows RA patients to measure their own disease activity online. The DAS28 (Disease Activity Score) was recently included by the Dutch Rheumatology Association in the latest treatment guidelines for people with RA.
Winter food can be healthy and low in calories!
When you eat hotchpotch, you can't help eating a nice lot of potatoes and vegetables. And that means a good healthy dose of vitamins, minerals and fibre. What's more, a plateful of this traditional Dutch dish is low in calories: 1 portion (500 grams) of hotchpotch with bacon or sausage contains between 400 and 500 calories. More if you add rich gravy, of course, but even less if you choose low-fat smoked sausage. With best wishes, The CORPUS team
