Newsletter CORPUS October 2008
Dear Sir/Madam, CORPUS ‘journey through the human body' opened its doors to the public more than 6 months ago. Recently, we were delighted to welcome our 100,000th visitor. You can read about this special event and many other developments in this October edition of our newsletter. In Memoriam Professor dr. P.A. Voûte We were shocked and saddened at CORPUS to learn about the sudden death of Tom Voûte. Tom was the medical adviser to CORPUS and a board member of the CORPUS Foundation. Tom passed away on Tuesday 26 August at the age of 72.
In the words of Henri Remmers, creator of CORPUS:
‘Quite simply, Tom made an enormous contribution to CORPUS. Right from the start, he was involved with the project as an adviser. Not only did he assist us with his medical knowledge, he was also a board member of the CORPUS Foundation and accompanied us through the entire development and construction process as a friend. He always found time to give us his expert advice, and he was always ready to listen, too. Along the way, he made no attempt to disguise his own vision; he really stood up for the things he believed in. This was also one of the things which made him such an exceptional and valuable person. Tom's involvement in the CORPUS project was huge, as was his interest in the people working on the project. He always had time for a chat and was always genuinely interested in what you had to say, which made him a highly valued and much loved member of our team. His death has touched us deeply and we will miss him on all fronts: as an adviser, as a board member, as a friend, as a person. We wish his wife, children and family the strength to cope with this major loss.' | CORPUS welcomes its 100.000th visitor An unsuspecting Michael Adriaens visited CORPUS with his grandparents on 7 August, and was given a festive welcome by Philippe Remmers, the Operations Manager. Michael was our 100,000th visitor, which is why he and his grandparents were made the centre of attention and given a selection of nice presents. After the festive moment was captured on camera, off they went on their ‘journey through the human body'. Michael had a wonderful time! |
LUMC teaches CORPUS visitors about genetics Appropriately enough, the Leiden University Medical Centre is practically at arm's length from CORPUS ‘journey through the human body'. The LUMC is one of the Founding Fathers which helped to make the CORPUS project possible. Prof. Dr. F.C. Breedveld, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the LUMC, has the following to say: Read more >>

| Do you know the reason for the traditional after-lunch dip? The sleepiness which many people feel after lunch has got nothing to do with the fact that you've just eaten, but with your biological clock. This clock controls our day and night-time rhythms but also plays a role in keeping us awake. It is highest around 9 am and 9 pm and lowest around 3 pm (after-lunch dip) and 3 am. |
CORPUS optimises Medical Infotheque As well as going on their ‘journey through the human body' in CORPUS, visitors can also explore the Medical Infotheque. You can wander through this interactive section by yourself, gathering all kinds of information about the human body. During the summer, we worked hard to optimise this Infotheque. New exhibits have been added, including those of the Dutch Kidney Foundation, Schering-Plough and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality. Read more>>

| The ministry's ‘healthy pizza' Since recently, the CORPUS Medical Infotheque has featured a large brick oven . In this area, visitors to CORPUS are shown a short film which explains, in a surprising way, the journey which food takes before its transformation, in this case into a healthy and sustainable pizza. This pizza oven is the stand which represents the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality within CORPUS as one of the Founding Fathers. Read more>> |
